Risk factors for death after trauma
Design, data, and findings
Cross sectional analysis of 47,295 adult trauma admissions at a level one center in Shiraz, 2013 to 2014. Multiple logistic regression for death within 48 hours of admission versus later death.
- Early death predicted by thoracic injury, severity score above 16, and age above 65
- Late death predicted by hospital acquired infection (odds ratio 12.7), age above 65, and severity score above 16
- Severity scores mapped from ICD-10 injury codes to AIS-98
Timing of in hospital trauma death
Design, data, and findings
Cross sectional study of 1,117 in hospital trauma deaths at the same center, 2010 to 2015. Deaths grouped by time from admission and related to age, mechanism, and injured body region.
- 41.6 percent of deaths in the first 24 hours, 27.7 percent between day 7 and one month
- Share of late deaths fell from 68 percent to 54 percent over the study period
- Thoracic injury made up 57 percent of early deaths
Hospital quality and patient satisfaction
Design, data, and findings
Survey of 402 discharged patients in Shiraz teaching hospitals with a 44 item questionnaire. Compared ISO certified hospitals with uncertified ones.
- Total satisfaction ranged from 66.5 to 77.5 across hospitals
- Certification alone did not track with higher satisfaction scores
- One certified hospital scored higher than the rest on all dimensions
Musculoskeletal observational studies
Design, data, and findings
Three observational studies at the Bone and Joint Research Center: core muscle endurance in hospital staff, treatment results for congenital hip dislocation, and radiographic measures of the tibiofibular syndesmosis.
- Compared core endurance in sedentary and active staff
- Reported medium term outcomes for referred hip dislocation cases
- Tested whether syndesmosis measures varied with age and sex
